SHAME (Ruin #3) by Rachel Van Dyken Blog tour. Review by Kim Howlett

Shame (Ruin #3)

By

Rachel Van Dyken

Synopsis
Everything done in darkness, will eventually be brought into the light.

I ran, but all it did was keep me one step ahead of my past. I tried to start over; new name, new identity. But you can't change your soul.
A fresh start at college was just what I needed. For a while, it worked. I was the party girl, the one that seemed confident, but it was a lie.
When guys kissed me--I felt only pain.
When they touched me--Nothing but fear.

Deep inside, every girl wants to be the beauty in the story, to find someone that will see you as their world.
But the truth? I was the beast. And as much as I wanted redemption, I wasn't fool enough to think I'd ever get it.
Until he walked into my life.

I wasn't prepared to fall for someone. My scars were too deep, the wounds too raw. But he offered me peace, he offered me security. I should have known it was just another lie--I should have known that falling in love with my professor was a bad idea.
But I was powerless to stop myself from falling.
And he was powerless to catch me.

Because the darkness finally caught up to me, and as fate would have it, a cruel twist almost bled me dry. But I'm stronger than I knew. I'm stronger than you think.
You think you know my story, but you don't....after all everyone has Shame in their lives-- and I'm no longer afraid to show you mine

Review by Kim Howlett

As I avid reader do a Rachel Van Dykens books, I was excited to receive a copy for a honest opinion. The trouble was I read some many books that I felt I needed to re read Ruin,Toxic and a Fearless because  it had been quite awhile since I'd read the other 2 books in the series. I also wanted to go back and re read them to get me back in the right frame of mind and back connecting with Rachels writing again.
Ruin, Toxic and Fearless were all great books so I had very high hopes for Shame, but I wasn't prepared for how great Shame would be. I was pulled in immediately and stayed connected right throughout the book with what felt like I didn't look up once. I just wanted to keep turning the pages as fast as I could to find out what happened, but then also wanted to read it slow because I didn't want it to ever end. It was a very catch 22.
This is Lisa story and I don't think I'm the only one in saying I'm extremely happy Lisa got her own book. We've had hints of her throughout the other books, she deserved her own book and for her story to be to told to the world.
Lisa friend Gabe's past came out in a Toxic and since then Lisa has been past has been come back to haunt her via hate mail. She is already living a life of regret and shame, she doesn't need people telling her how worthless she is. She's had a ex's boyfriend emotionally and psychological reminders of his worth less she feels and the scars you can see and can't too,
Lisa tried to start a fresh, and start a new life. She went to college and tried to act like everybody expected her to whilst your in college. At college she meets a young, be hot professor, Tristan. He's not the nice hot teacher you'd think he'd be, he calls her out, intimidates her and makes her life even more miserable. She's already scared of the threats and her past catching up with her  the last thing she needs is the hot professor who seems to have a pull towards.
Tristan is a very angry person. He's took time of from his real life to find answers. All he wants is revenge. He's ruthless, feels people don't understand him, he needs order and control, and without all these things he doesn't feel safe. Tristan is very secretive throughout the story, but as it unravels why he's so secretive, you understand why he was so secretive. It was a brilliant way to keep you in grossed in the book.
The darkness between the 2 characters is what draws you in. Although you no a little on Lisa, her story is still quite a mysterious. The whole story is about who can you trust, games, manipulation and the past catching up with the present.
I already loved Lisa from what I knew of her in the other books. Like I said previously, I'm glad she got to tell her story and it was one you won't forget in a hurry.
Tristan at first I was abit unsure of. I felt the way he treated her was wrong and exactly what she running from. I was really hoping that he would change and that Tristan who she was going to end up with. My feelings for Tristan changed quite quickly. You could feel a pull from her towards Lisa, but you could just see 2 people extremely damaged who need some help and maybe helping each other is what they need to move on with their lives and to both be happy. It took along time for Lisa ans Tristan to slowly learn to trust each other and open up. There was so many secrets they were keeping from everyone, that it caused a lot of insecurities between them both and that's why the trust took so long to establish.
The story was told in both Lisa's and Tristans POV which i always love. You get a much better, rounded story hearing both sides of the story and getting in both of the characters minds.
The book was the best in the series in my opinion. It had twists and turns and ups and downs everywhere. I never knew what was going to happen next.
The whole book was thrilling, emotional, deceitful, manipulative and even creepy in places.
This book takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions, and then the ending just hits you out if no where.
This book other books in the series were more emotional in my opinion. This book is emotional, but it's also is completely different to the other books.
Again Rachel's book was amazing. This women can't do no wrong in my eyes, I've read all her books and will continue reading all her books u til she stops writing (hopefully never) lol.
A amazing book and series. You could read as a standalone but I wouldn't recommend it as your miss out on so much and the story won't make you feel the emotions this book needs.

Other books in the Ruin Series
Ruin (Ruin #1)

I'm not your typical girl. I've been running away from the memories that haunt me for so long that depression has become my only comfort. I was content in the darkness...until Wes Michals offered to be my light.

I didn't know that time wasn't my ally -- that every second that ticked past was one step closer to the end of something that was beginning to mean the end of myself. He tried to warn me. He promised me all he was able to offer--each moment as it came--but it would never be enough.

Sometimes when you think it's the end, it's only the beginning. Wes thought he could save me, but in giving me everything, he ruined me. Because after one kiss, one touch, I couldn't--I wouldn't ever be the same.

And from that moment on, his heartbeat became my own

Toxic (Ruin #2)

Gabe Hyde is on borrowed time. He's been hiding his identity for over four years-hidden from the world that used to adore him--obsess over him--driven to the edge of insanity by one poor choice.
But that one choice, altered the course of his life forever.
Pretending isn't all it's cracked up to be, especially when pretending means hiding your real self from the people that care about you the most. But if anyone ever discovered the truth it wouldn't just be his life at risk--but hers.

Saylor doesn't hate men.
Just Gabe.
Only Gabe.
He's a reckless, happy-go-lucky, silver spoon fed pain in her ass. Everything about him makes her more and more confused. Unfortunately they both donate time at the same Group Home. If she wasn't afraid of flunking, she'd be long gone. She hates that she's attracted to him almost as much as he hates that he's attracted to her--and she can tell, especially since their first encounter ended up making her knees so weak she couldn't form coherent sentences for weeks afterwards. But the closer she gets to him, the more confused she becomes. He isn't who he says he is, and he's hiding something big.

What happen when two worlds collide? Two worlds that never should have met in the first place? Some secrets are too big to be hidden forever--the only question? Will his destroy everyone he loves? Or finally bring about the redemption he's been craving for the past four years?

Everyone has a secret...What's yours?

Fearless ( Ruin 2.5)

When I met Kiersten, time stood still. It was as if every cell in my body screamed HER. I couldn't look away, I couldn't walk away, I couldn't even move. My other half, my soul mate, was staring right at me. I had to have her. I had to make her mine. But I felt selfish doing that--knowing that I may not have endless amounts of time to give her...and even now that every things' over with and I've been given that time back.

Nothing is ever certain in this life.

Which is why I'm about to do something crazy, impulsive, daring.
After all, what type of person would I be if I didn't take my own advice?
I'm jumping off the cliff, I'm living fearlessly.

This is the continuation of Wes and Kiersten's story
