Review

I signed up to review this book, because the book cover pulled me straight in. It is extremely hot, but mysterious looking as well. After reading the Synopsis I was hooked and knew I wanted to read this book immediately. I've never read a book by Amity Cross, but I've heard good things about her books, so was looking forward to finding a new author to read and also reading a great story.
Ren is the main character. She's a very strong women, can stand in her own two feet and not a push over. I connected with her instantly and liked her straight away. She has had a rough time of things watching her mother suffer from cancer most of her life. Once her mum passes away, she keeps her promise to her mum and goes to look for her father, who is the owner of Beat, a down and out boxing studio. Ren settles in and enjoys the boxing studio, and gets involved with the classes. Then in walks........ASH!!!
Ash is Beats past wonder boy, a ex pro fighter. He is the whole package, tattooed, at reagent, beautiful, a world class fighter, but he also has "danger" wrote all over him. Ash however is a broken man. He was the "Golden boy" who just upped and left one night, without any answers, why has he come back now? And why did he leave? I found Ash intriguing. When reading about him, there's this air of mystery surrounding him. His character was compelling and all I wanted to know is what happened to him and why he left?. As a stand alone character, I could easily read just about him and his story all-day long, but when you bring in Ren to, theirs explosive sexual tension, fighting if attraction to one another and lots of will they won't they moments, which I love. I loved the romance built over time, not just fell in to bed together and then go through the problems. I like to see them healing each other as they realise their feelings.
At the start of there "relationship" they were constantly at each other's throat, it made toy wonder who was going to break first because those push and pull was intense, but with 2 very stubborn people, I couldn't be sure who'd back down.
Ash struggled with his feeling with Ren. He's broken and doesn't understand any if the things he's feeling. So he foes the typical male behaviour of pushing her away and pushing her buttons to make her just leave her alone. This makes Ren fight harder. She is broken too, but she knows exactly what's he's doing by treating her that way.
I loved both characters. They both had great back stories, with a few twists and turns here and there. The sex of course was very hot and intense as you'd expect it to be between 2 people like Ren and Ash. The book had pretty much everything I love in a book.
This is a completely different fighter book to alot of fighter books I've read previously, and I have to see this one was unique and lived up to my expectations. It's unusual to find a bad ass chick and a hot smoking Alpha in the same book, so I loved that the author didn't write either character as being weak. Yes they are broken in certain ways, but no means are with of them weak.
I'm can't wait until book 2 comes out and I will defiantly read more books from the author in the future. 4.5 stars

Excerpt

My fist slammed into the heavy leather bag, the impact jolting up my arm and absorbing into my torso.
The only light was from the back row of fluorescents I’d switched on over the ring. It was dark, murky and helped me pretend I was someplace else. The drama from the daylight hours was gone and it was just me and the darkness. Exactly the way I liked it.
I began another set of punches, hair sticking to the sweat beading across the back of my neck. Structure. This was the only thing that was predictable in my life and I needed predictable.
Stance. Guard. Punch. Guard. Repeat.
There was a loud cough behind me and I spun on my heel, heart thumping in my chest, and my gaze collided with Ash’s.
“Fuck,” I exclaimed, holding a hand over my heart. “Don’t fucking do that, Ash.” Typical. The creeper was being all creeper again.
“What are you doing?” He stared at me, his gaze hovering a little too long on my bare midriff.
I steadied the bag with one hand, taking deep breaths. “What does it look like?”
“I’ve never seen…” He trailed off and I wondered if I’d finally made the Golden Boy lost for words.
I turned my back so I didn’t have to look at him. “What? A woman in a sports bra? Highly doubt it.” I rolled my eyes and wiped my forehead with the back of my arm. Even though I couldn’t see, I felt his gaze burning into my skin and I suppressed the urge to squeeze my thighs together. Infuriating, self-absorbed, arrogant…

Amity Cross isn’t my real name. That’s no secret.

I didn’t want my Mum and my workplace to find out I wrote about doodles and tongue-in-cheek sexual innuendo.
